The office of Israeli President Isaac Herzog has denied recent claims by former US President Donald Trump that President Herzog is considering a pardon for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The Israeli presidency clarified that Herzog has not had any conversations with Donald Trump since the latter submitted his pardon request several weeks ago. According to Herzog's office, there is currently no process or discussion regarding a presidential pardon for the prime minister.
Recall that Benjamin Netanyahu has been on trial for five years, accused of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust in three separate cases.
The Israeli prime minister has repeatedly denied the allegations, calling them baseless and politically motivated.
In November, Donald Trump sent an official letter to President Herzog, demanding a “full pardon” for Netanyahu. In the letter, Trump argued that the Israeli prime minister was facing a “political and unjustified prosecution.”
However, the Israeli Presidency emphasizes that since the submission of this request there has been no contact between Herzog and Trump, implying that the issue of pardon is not part of the institutional agenda at this stage.
