US President Donald Trump has just hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. Before the meeting, the two leaders gave public statements to the media, setting the tone for the talks that will follow.
Trump directly addressed the Iranian threat, stressing that any attempt by Tehran to rearm would be met with a strong response from the United States. “ If Iran is trying to rebuild its military power, we will take them down. We will take them down, we will hit them hard,” he told reporters, adding later that he had heard about the possibility that Iran might seek a deal and that it would be “a smarter choice .” However, he warned that “sometimes deals don’t happen.”
Another sensitive topic that was touched upon before the meeting was the latest case of Israeli hostages left in Gaza. Trump spoke in personal tones about Ran Gvili, the still missing Israeli youth, and his family currently in Florida. “ We have a wonderful boy. His parents are here, an extraordinary family. We are doing everything we can to get his body back ,” Trump declared.
Regarding the situation in Gaza, Trump said that reconstruction will begin very soon and described the territory as a "difficult neighborhood," adding that some initial steps have already been taken to improve living conditions and infrastructure.
For his part, Netanyahu, before the start of the talks, praised the relationship with Trump as the closest and most stable that Israel has had with any American president. “ Israel has never had a better friend in the White House. It is not even close to others, ” Netanyahu said, adding that this strong relationship is not measured only by the number of meetings, but by the content and intensity of cooperation.
