Mitsotakis against farmers: I don't understand those who protest without
Kyriakos Mitsotakis

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has reacted to the wave of farmer protests that have swept several areas of the country in recent days, sharply criticizing the blocking tactics and the rejection of dialogue by some of the protesters.

In a public statement, he said he could not understand how someone could protest aggressively, blocking roads and causing disruption to daily life, while refusing to listen to and discuss the government's proposals for the agricultural sector.

The head of government stressed that while there are around 4,000 tractors engaged in the current protests, Greece counts around 400,000 professional farmers, underlining that the majority of agriculture is not participating in the road blockades.

According to him, it is important to start a serious debate on the medium and long-term perspective of the agricultural sector, beyond support with subsidies.

He said that it is necessary to discuss how farmers can become more competitive, invest in production, reduce costs and improve infrastructure, instead of remaining dependent only on economic aid. In this context, Mitsotakis considered cooperation with agricultural representatives at an open table necessary.

Focusing on the impact of the protests on the movement of citizens, especially during the holiday period, the Prime Minister expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to citizens traveling for the celebrations. He called for understanding from farmers, at least until the end of the Holy Water (Fota) holiday, emphasizing the importance of these days for the economy and market supply.

The Greek government is expected to unveil a package of proposals to support the agricultural sector in the coming weeks, but for now, the emphasis remains on the need for dialogue and avoiding social tensions that affect ordinary citizens and the national economy.
