Trump and Putin have another "positive conversation" about Ukraine

The White House has confirmed that US President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to the US administration, the conversation between the two leaders was considered positive, while the Kremlin has announced that another phone call between them is expected to take place very soon. The focus of the communication was the process of peace negotiations in Ukraine and the positioning of the parties for a possible agreement to end the war.

Trump, from his Mar-a-Lago residence, said he would brief the Russian president on his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last night, also in Florida. On the other hand, the Kremlin's foreign policy adviser, Yuri Ushakov, said that Putin has expressed a willingness to cooperate with the US towards a peace agreement, but a recent attack on his residence in the Novgorod region has influenced the reassessment of his positions.

Ukrainian President Zelensky has said he considers the presence of international troops on Ukrainian territory essential as part of security guarantees for any agreement aimed at ending the war. In his meeting with Trump, he requested security guarantees for a period of 50 years. However, the current proposed draft provides for US guarantees for 15 years, while the form of these guarantees remains unclear.

Zelensky stressed that Ukraine is seeking guarantees similar to NATO's Article 5, where any attack on it would be treated as an attack on allied countries. He stressed that the updated version of the 20-point peace plan has been accepted in principle by the US, with full agreement from the Ukrainian side and slight reservations from Trump, who estimated the agreement at about 95%.

The Florida meeting was considered productive by both sides, although President Trump warned that some complex issues remain unresolved, including the status of the Donbass territory, where Russia has significant control. He stressed that the area could be turned into a demilitarized zone, but a final decision on this is expected within weeks.

Meanwhile, European leaders have declared their readiness to lead a multinational force in Ukraine as part of the US proposal for a peace deal. The initiative includes Britain, France, Germany and eight other countries, which aim to contribute troops to help rebuild Ukraine's defense capabilities, air security and maritime defense, including possible operations inside Ukrainian territory.
