Here's how the tragic accident in New York happened...
Footage of the serious accident at LaGuardia Airport in New York has been released, where an Air Canada plane collided with a fire truck while landing on the runway.
Security camera footage shows the moment a Bombardier CRJ-900 aircraft touches down on the runway at high speed and hits a vehicle in its path, in heavy rain. The impact causes a large water spray and the fire truck to swerve sharply.
According to preliminary data, the two pilots died on the spot, while 41 other people, including two people in the fire truck, were transported to the hospital with various injuries. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims.
Audio recordings from air traffic control reveal the tension of the final moments before the crash. Repeated calls of “Stop, stop, stop!” are heard directed at the aircraft, which had been cleared to cross the runway for another emergency. The controllers appear to have realized the danger just seconds before the crash.
A surviving passenger described the landing as initially normal but very hard, followed immediately by the crash. "People were thrown into the air, the plane started shaking left and right. It was chaos," he told US media.
Authorities have launched investigations to determine responsibilities and clarify whether it was a case of human error or a failure in coordinating safety procedures on the runway.
