From Istanbul to Berlin, a Turk is elected head of the German secret service
Sinan Selen

Turkish-born Sinan Selen will become the head of Germany's counterintelligence agency after renouncing his Turkish citizenship several years ago, the Bild newspaper reported, citing Bundestag members from the ruling coalition parties.

Sinan Selen was born in 1972 in Istanbul.

He came to Cologne, Germany, at the age of four; his parents were journalists and worked for Deutsche Welle. When he left Turkey, he didn't speak a word of German.

Tonight German media announced that lawyer Sinan Selen will be the new head of Germany's domestic secret service (or as it is officially called: the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution).

This service should not be confused with the BND, which is a secret service for the outside world.

With this appointment, for the first time in Germany, a person of foreign origin takes a key position in the most important security structures.

Selen has worked for many years in the private sector and in German law enforcement institutions. Selen is considered by security experts to be one of Germany's most skilled counter-terrorism investigators. Until now, he was deputy director of Germany's domestic secret service.
