As part of international cooperation initiatives in the protection sector of the market of goods and services, the Guardia di Finanza has joined the international operation "Ludus" organized by Europol.
The operation aims to combat the trade in counterfeit, unsafe or non-compliant toys.
The initiative, carried out from 5 September 2022 to 31 January 2023 in 29 member states, led to the seizure of over 19 million toys.
The total value of the seized toys is about 79 million euros. During the operation, 298 subjects were administratively denounced and 205 people were reported to the Judicial Authority.
In particular, the Guardia di Finanza has carried out the seizure of 2.2 million toys in the national territory. The estimated total value of these toys is around 17 million euros. These results represent more than 20% of seizures carried out at European level.
During the operational phase, investigative actions are focused on countering illegal trade, through the reconstruction of the logistical and administrative chain that allows the introduction and distribution of illegal products on the market. The goal was to identify key players in the trade chain and dismantle any supporting criminal organizations.
The operational action also included checks and inspections to identify illegal shipments and deposits, as well as the application of targeted search methods and criteria to the main national online sales channels, shopping portals or e-commerce platforms. The goal was to identify sources that offer game products that pose a high risk to consumer safety or that illegally use trademarks, distinctive signs, and industrial designs.
The most confiscated products include educational, entertainment and electronic toys and models, as well as video games and dolls featuring characters from popular children's television shows.
The recalled toys did not meet the safety standards required by national and European legislation and did not provide essential information for the buyer.
