A 19-year-old man who was arrested after shooting a 44-year-old taxi driver three times in the back and then robbing him has sparked widespread outrage in Turkey.
The incident happened on the evening of January 31 in Izmir, when the 44-year-old taxi driver Oguz Erge stopped to pick up the 19-year-old.
As heard in the video provided by the security cameras, the taxi driver expresses his dislike for the mask that the 19-year-old has put on his face.
"I'm sick, that's why I'm wearing it," the 19-year-old told him. The taxi driver tells him that "no one will pick you up if you wear a mask", while the young man asks him: Should you leave people on the street in such weather? It's freezing.'
The 44-year-old stops at the place where the 19-year-old asked him and informs him that they have arrived at their destination.
After that, the 19-year-old asked him how much money he owed him, and before the 44-year-old could answer, he shot three times. After killing him, the 19-year-old sits on the front seat asking for money in the taxi and while the taxi driver was moaning, he shoots him in the face and tells him "you shouldn't trust everyone".
The 44-year-old was taken seriously injured to the hospital and a few hours later he succumbed to his injuries, as announced by the Turkish Minister of Health, but he could not survive.
The event caused a stir on social networks. His colleagues protested and said that he was good at his job and was at peace with people.
Police teams launched investigations into the incident and reviewed footage from the taxi's vehicle camera and about 70 security cameras in the area. From a total of 110 hours of footage watched, it was determined that the suspect was Delil Aysal. Aysal was caught and detained in the house where she was hiding. After the procedures at the police station, he was arrested and sent to prison.
