The US Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, in a press conference at the Pentagon, stated that the US will not tolerate attacks on its troops in the Middle East.
Triggered by the killing of 3 American soldiers a few days ago in Jordan, the US has decided to launch several attacks in Iraq and Syria.
" The US and President Biden will not tolerate attacks on American troops. Our teammates were killed when a one-way drone hit their living quarters. We continue to gather the facts about this deadly attack. Our teammates were killed by the Iranian-backed radical militia operating inside Syria and Iraq ," he said.
Further, Ausitn added that the US is aware that this is a dangerous moment in the Middle East, for this reason, he added, Washington will take care to take all the necessary steps.
" This is a dangerous moment in the Middle East, but the US will take all necessary actions. After Hamas's attack on Israel, Iranian-backed and Iranian-funded terrorist groups have tried to create even more unrest, including the Houthis ," he said.
Austin stated that there will be a multi-pronged response to the drone attack on the US base in Jordan.
" We have the ability to respond several times depending on the situation, the goal is to contain the crisis in Gaza. There is a lot of activity in the region, but there has always been activity in the region. The Houthis continue to do things that are very irresponsible and illegal. The goal ours is to make sure that we continue to take away their capabilities. The activities of the Houthis must stop ," Austin stated.
When asked by reporters why the US waited until American troops were killed before escalating its response to the groups in the Middle East.
Lloyd Austin says that the country has responded several times, but added that now the US will use even more of its new capabilities.
" This attack was scandalous and the attack was in the sleeping area of our base. It is time to remove even more of the capabilities we have in the past ," he declared.
Asked if the US is playing into the hands of the Houthis, Austin said the group has attacked ships of interest to about 50 countries and that the US should do something about it.
When asked about the conflict in Gaza, he stated that they are discussing with the Israeli side about the possibility of reaching a truce and about post-war Gaza.
" This is a fierce conflict, but the Israelis are changing their attitude. We talked to them about it last week. I will continue to emphasize the importance of addressing the issue of the Palestinian people. It is critical. We are doing more, but we are not doing enough ," concluded the US Secretary of Defense.
