The US appears to have approved a plan for multi-day strikes in Iraq and Syria against multiple targets, including Iranian personnel and facilities, according to a US official.
President Joe Biden said Tuesday he had decided how to respond to a drone strike in northeastern Jordan near the Syrian border this week that killed three U.S. service members and wounded more than 40.
The United States blamed Iran-backed militants for the drone attack. The top diplomat, Antony Blinken, said on Monday that the US response could be multi-tiered, phased and sustained over time.
In its report, CBS did not elaborate on what a US approval would mean in terms of the timeline for the attacks.
Relations between Tehran and Washington are strained after the deaths of US soldiers that officials blame on Iran-backed militants. Iran's Revolutionary Guard has previously said it will respond to any US threats.
