Clashes with senior officials, conflicts over Venezuela and tensions in Trump's inner circle weaken the former diplomat's position
Richard Grenell is a well-known name in Albanian politics. He has appeared at times as a “lifeboat” for Sali Berisha, after his “non grata” declaration by the State Department during the Biden presidency, as well as as a friend of Prime Minister Edi Rama. Before Trump’s election as US President, Berisha’s Democrats hoped that in his administration, Grenell would take the position of Secretary of State and, referring to his statements in Tirana regarding the “non grata”, Berisha and his family would be removed from the US blacklist. On the other hand, Grenell appeared as a “friend” of Edi Rama, which was also confirmed by the Prime Minister.
The British newspaper Daily Mail has in an article conducted a thorough analysis of the rise and fall of Richard Grenell, the former US ambassador to Germany during Trump's first presidency, and then his position as Director of National Intelligence and special envoy of the US President.
"Daily Mail " writes, citing diplomatic sources, that Grenell's ambition has been the post of Secretary of State. However, according to a former Trump administration official, negative perceptions of him within the administration make this objective impossible in the current circumstances.
The combination of confrontational style, internal conflicts, and intertwined private interests has limited his influence in Trump's second term.

Richard Grenell worked for years to climb the tough ranks of the MAGA movement, surprisingly rising to lead the main US intelligence apparatus in 2020.
Six years later, at the height of Donald Trump's power, he runs a theater, now even this role has been put on hold.
Grenell’s career took another sharp turn this month, when Trump announced plans to close the Kennedy Center for a massive two-year renovation project. The decision follows a year of internal turmoil and high-profile cancellations that have dogged the institution during his tenure. Now the “total restructuring” leaves the former intelligence chief with a shattered reputation, both figuratively and practically.
"We were all surprised. I'm afraid they're going to completely tear it down," said a source who worked with Grenell at the Kennedy Center.

In one case, he arranged for Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić to travel to Florida for a meeting with Trump in May 2025, but the meeting never took place. Sources say Susie Wiles blocked the meeting. The official version from Belgrade was that Vučić returned for health reasons.
Diplomats familiar with the situation said Grenell's interests in Serbia are linked to his collaboration with Jared Kushner's investment firm Affinity Partners. He brokered a $500 million project to build a luxury hotel and memorial complex in downtown Belgrade, with a 99-year lease from the Serbian state. The project may have been shelved.
Affinity Partners did not respond to a request for comment.
Grenell also continues to run the private equity firm Capitol Media Partners. According to public wealth trackers, his net worth is estimated at between $1 million and $5 million.
Since his appointment in February to head the Kennedy Center, the institution has faced controversy, including accusations of budget cuts, backlash over the name change to the "Trump-Kennedy Center" and clashes with well-known artists.
A growing number of artists have boycotted the stage, canceling shows and ticket sales plummeting. Grenell has accused CNN and The Washington Post of fueling the backlash.
A diplomat who worked with him in Venezuela told the Daily Mail: "At first he was seen as the problem solver, who would travel around the world to fix situations... but that faded away."
According to sources, Grenell has told friends that he plans to leave the post later this year.
His ambition, according to a veteran diplomat, has been to become Secretary of State. “But I don’t see it happening. Trump knows that a lot of people have a negative view of him,” he told the Daily Mail. / Pamphlet /
