Jeffrey Epstein was strangled, not hanged, in his New York prison cell, according to a doctor who was present at his autopsy, the Daily Mail reports.
Dr Michael Baden has called for the paedophile's cause of death to be reopened for investigation, almost seven years after he was found dead at the Metropolitan Correctional Center on August 10, 2019.
He is not convinced by the New York Medical Examiner's Office's conclusion that the American millionaire ended his life while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
“In my opinion, his death was most likely caused by the pressure of the clamp rather than by hanging,” the pathologist told The Telegraph. He added: “Considering all the information now available, further investigation is required into the cause and manner of death.”
Although the doctor did not perform the autopsy himself, he was present during the examination and acted as an observer on behalf of Epstein's family.
“At the time the autopsy was performed by the coroner, we both agreed that, based on the autopsy report and the available information, more information was needed to determine the cause and manner of death,” Dr Baden said.
Following the release of more than three million documents related to the pedophile by the US Department of Justice, more questions have been raised about the manner of Epstein's death.
Hidden deep in the latest bundle of documents are previously unpublished footage that reveals the moment prison guards found the pedophile's lifeless body.
A video shows the silhouette of a prison guard approaching a table near Epstein's cell at 6:30 a.m. on the day of his death. Just 10 seconds later, the person walks towards the cell.
A little over a minute later, a guard is seen moving back and forth between the security desk, where he is later joined by two others, and the area where Epstein's cell was located.
Guards are then seen running between the two areas. Epstein was officially pronounced dead at 6:39 a.m., abruptly ending one of the most closely watched federal criminal cases in recent years.
But according to recently released files, investigators noticed an orange shape moving up the stairs towards the financier's cell on the night of his death.
Officials from the FBI and the DOJ's Office of Inspector General (OIG) flagged suspicious security camera footage, which may have shown "an inmate" climbing up to the floor where the notorious pedophile was being held.
An OIG report stated that at 10:39 p.m. on August 9, 2019, FBI agents observed that “an orange spark appeared to be ascending the stairs of L Tier, possibly an inmate being escorted to that floor.”
Other documents reveal that authorities disagreed about the cause of this unexplained "orange spark."
While the FBI suspected it was another inmate, the Inspector General wrote: “The inmates are currently in solitary confinement, it is possible that someone is transporting sheets or bedding for the inmates upstairs.”
The Inspector General's final report stated: "At approximately 10:39 p.m., an unidentified officer appeared to ascend the stairs of L Tier and then reappeared on camera at 10:41 p.m."
The analysis by the two investigative bodies contradicts public statements made by at least two senior American officials.
Bill Barr, who was the US attorney general during Trump's first term, stated in an interview in 2019 that he had personally reviewed security footage confirming that no one had entered the area where Epstein was being held on the night he died.
And last May, former FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino told Fox News: "The video is very clear. He's the only person in there and the only one coming out. You can see it."
He added shortly before the video's release last August: "We're working on improving it to make sure you have an improved version and we'll also provide the original so you don't think there was any manipulation."
In light of the new information, Dr Baden is calling for further investigation into the financier's cause of death.
