President Donald Trump had a lukewarm assessment of French President Emmanuel Macron's willingness to join an effort to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
" I talked to him. He was, on a scale of zero to 10, I would say he was an eight ," Trump said during a White House event on Monday.
" Not perfect, but it's France ," Trump added as he shrugged.
The US president has criticized US allies who are rejecting his requests for help in policing the disputed waterway.
France has said it is ready to provide defensive support to escort ships through the strait when the "most intense phase" of the war ends.
But Trump, even as he seeks support from allies, also asserted that the US does not need their help.
“ I don’t advertise them too much, because my stance is that we don’t need anyone. We are the strongest nation in the world. We have the strongest military, by far, in the world. We don’t need them. But it’s interesting: I almost do it in some cases, not because we need them, but because I want to find out how they react ,” he said.
