The European Union demands that Serbia join its fight against Russia as a mandatory condition for European integration, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated, according to the Russian news agency TASS.
The Russian diplomat said that, in the context of Belgrade's efforts to integrate into the EU, Moscow has asked Serbia how it plans to react to two main demands coming from Brussels: recognition of Kosovo's independence and alignment with the European Union's foreign and security policy, including sanctions against Russia.
According to Lavrov, this issue remains relevant because the European Union institutions are aware of the difficult situation in which Serbia finds itself.
"The Brussels bureaucracy cannot help but understand that Serbia is in a difficult situation. I have no doubt that the demands for Serbia to fully support the EU's foreign policy and security actions also imply joining the war in Ukraine," he said.
Lavrov's statements reflect Moscow's official stance on Serbia's European integration process and on the pressure that, according to Russia, is being exerted on Belgrade to harmonize its foreign policy with that of the European Union.
