Israel and Hamas are moving towards a ceasefire deal and the release of some of the hostages still held by the militant group in Gaza, while the UN children's agency has warned that 17,000 children have been left without or separated from their families since the conflict started on October 7, writes The Guardian.
Qatar, which has mediated between Israel and Hamas, indicated that the militant group had given initial support for a deal after weeks of delicate and secretive negotiations. However, Qatar is waiting for the final answer from them.
" We cannot say that the current phase of negotiations is zero and at the same time we cannot say that we have reached an agreement ," said Taher al-Nono, adviser to the head of the Political Bureau of Hamas based in Qatar.
The proposal calls for a ceasefire of about six weeks, in which Palestinians in Gaza would be allowed to move freely around the coast, while hostages would be released in three stages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held in Israel.
According to reports in Jewish media, women, children and sick and elderly prisoners held by Hamas will be released first, then female soldiers in the second phase. There will be an increase in the humanitarian aid allowed to Gaza by Israel.
In the final, more sensitive stage, the small soldiers and bodies of the dead hostages would be released. The Israel-Gaza conflict has left thousands dead so far.
