Half of American adults believe Israel has "gone too far" in its military campaign in Gaza, according to a new poll by The Associated Press - NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.
This figure has increased from 40 percent that was in November. The survey was conducted from January 25-28, which coincides with the death of three US servicemen in a drone strike in Jordan.
How voters view Israel's campaign
The poll shows growing disapproval among Republican voters, with 33% saying Israel's military response has gone too far, up from 18% in November.
52 percent of independents share this view, compared to 39 percent who do not think the use of force has been exceeded. The figure stands at 62 percent among Democrats, about the same majority as in November.
Biden's handling of the conflict
The poll also finds that support for President Biden's handling of the conflict is waning.
The poll shows that 31 percent of American adults approve of Biden's handling of the conflict, including approval from just 46 percent of Democrats. Notably, about 70% of Democrats under the age of 45 disapprove.
This seems like an alarm bell for Biden, who is soon expected to face his opponent Donald Trump in the presidential elections. He must put pressure on Israel to stop the war and initiate a ceasefire.
We recall that the US has been a staunch supporter of Israel both militarily and diplomatically since Hamas militants killed more than 1,200 people in the October 7 attacks.
However, global support for Israel has waned as the Palestinian death toll in the ensuing Israeli offensive in Gaza exceeds 27,000, according to the territory's health ministry.
