US President Donald Trump launched a trade war with Europe today. At 4:00 PM local time in the US and 10:00 PM our time, he will address the nation on why he took such action.
One of the countries that is undoubtedly affected is Italy. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has reacted to the situation, stating that a trade war between Europe and the United States must be avoided, as it would harm both sides.
" I remain convinced that we must work to avoid in all possible ways a trade war from which no one would benefit, neither the United States nor Europe ," she said.
Meloni added, however, that her view does not exclude that, if necessary, measures should be taken to protect Italian products.
Meloni said that Italian food and agricultural products are widely exported to Europe and globally and the United States represents the second largest market, with exports up to 17% in 2024.
" I think it would also be unfair to many Americans because it would limit the ability to purchase our great products only to those who have the economic opportunity to spend more ," Meloni added.
