Europe's first autonomous military convoy has been unveiled in Spain.
The EU-funded project demonstrated a fleet of autonomous ground vehicles performing logistics coordinated by Artificial Intelligence.
The project is called "Convoy Operations with Manned-unManneD Systems" or the "COMMANDS" consortium, and is coordinated by the Spanish aeronautics and defense company "Sener".
It was produced by a group of 21 European partners and financed with an investment of 24.8 million euros from the "European Defense Fund".
The "COMMANDS" group says it coordinates manned and unmanned systems on the ground and in the air, and improves how military vehicles operate in "unstructured" environments and with weak or degraded satellite signals.
The units in Spain were controlled by the Naviground system, manufactured by Sener. It uses a combination of sensors, AI, machine learning, and 5G telecommunications networks, which allows a ground vehicle to understand its surroundings and move autonomously.
Sener had previously tested the Naviground system on a series of military vehicles that included a logistics assistant and several tanks.
In a promotional video, the company described the system as "one of the big secret weapons" to improve the way military vehicles collaborate and exchange information.
