Russian forces appear to be on the verge of finally capturing the eastern Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk, a symbolic victory that President Vladimir Putin has pursued for 21 months at an increasingly high cost.
Fighting inside the city has intensified in recent days, as Russian troops have successfully infiltrated it.
The fall of Pokrovsk, whose strategic value has been greatly diminished but would nevertheless represent the biggest victory for Moscow since 2023, now seems almost inevitable, according to those on the ground.
While Kiev denied Russian claims that Ukrainian forces in Pokrovsk are already surrounded, saying on Wednesday that active operations halting the Russian advance are still ongoing, Ukrainian soldiers on the ground have described an increasingly grim reality.
"The situation is difficult, with all kinds of fighting taking place, exchanges of fire in urban areas and shelling with all kinds of weapons," a battalion commander told CNN, speaking on condition of anonymity for security reasons.
"We are almost surrounded, but we are used to it," he said. Another soldier, who also asked not to be named for security reasons, told CNN that the Russian army continues to advance in large numbers.
"The intensity of their movements is so great that the (Ukrainian) drone operators simply cannot keep up with the pace. The Russians often move in groups of three, counting on the fact that two will be destroyed, but one will reach the city and gain a foothold there. About a hundred such groups can pass in a day," a soldier from the Ukrainian drone unit Peaky Blinders told CNN.
Symbolic battle
The claim that Russia is willing to sacrifice two soldiers to get by with one may seem strange, but this claim is consistent with observations made by international researchers who have noted a very high number of Russian casualties around Pokrovsk, even though taking the city will not make much difference on the ground.
This is because the battle for Pokrovsk is no longer a battle for a strategically important logistics center. On the contrary, it has now become a symbolic battle.
“From a battlefield perspective, this doesn’t make sense,” said George Barros, who leads the Russia and Geospatial Intelligence teams at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a Washington-based think tank.
Pokrovsk has long been seen as a key city for Ukrainians, due to its road and rail connections. It is located at the intersection of several major roads, leading to Donetsk and Kostyantynivka to the east and Dnipro and Zaporizhzhia to the west.

“Ai po zhvillon një fushatë strategjike informacioni që synon ta paraqesë fitoren ushtarake të Rusisë në fushën e betejës si të pashmangshme”, shtoi ai.
'Nuk ka urdhër për tërheqje'

Një ushtar nga Brigada e 129-të e Ukrainës, i cili aktualisht është i vendosur pranë Kostyantynivka, i tha CNN-së se pritshmëritë në terren janë që “sapo rusët të merren me Pokrovskun dhe (qytetin fqinj) Myrnohrad, presioni mbi Kostyantynivka do të rritet dhe ata do të lëvizin drejt Druzhkivka-s”.
Ai tha se batalioni i tij nuk ka numrin e ushtarëve që duhet të ketë dhe po i mbarojnë automjetet e blinduara.
The soldier said the main concern of troops in the area is that the Ukrainian leadership will try to hold on to what is left of Pokrovsku for as long as possible, because abandoning the city would be seen as a major failure.
"There was no order to retreat, although everyone now understands that the fall of Pokrovsk is inevitable. Pokrovsk was held for a very long time, a very long time. But the forces were exhausted and reinforcements were not sent in time," he said.
He said the withdrawal would become much more dangerous the longer the Ukrainians hesitated, repeating previous painful experiences for Kiev's forces. The battles of Bakhmut in 2023 and Avdiivka in 2024 were both marked by delayed withdrawals, which led to high levels of casualties among Ukrainian personnel.
"We will have to break through this blockade, and you certainly understand the high level of losses that such a break out of the siege will bring," he said.
