A bipartisan resolution seeking to stop Donald Trump from attacking Iran has been introduced in the US Congress.
Republican House Representative Thomas Massie has joined forces with Democratic politicians like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, representing an unexpected alliance.
"The Constitution does not allow the executive branch to unilaterally commit an act of war against a sovereign nation that has not attacked the United States," Massie said.
Massie added: "Congress has the sole power to declare war on Iran.
"The war that is taking place between Israel and Iran is not our war. Even if it were, Congress should decide on such matters under our Constitution," he said.
The resolution reflects a warning issued shortly before by top Democratic senator Bernie Sanders.
"The United States Constitution is very clear. There is no ambiguity," the Vermont senator said.
"It is Congress that determines whether we go to war, not the president. Trump should not take illegal military action against Iran," he said.
