The US government is heading towards a shutdown that will most likely be finalized tonight. A meeting between President Donald Trump and Democratic leaders in Congress did not mark any progress in narrowing differences on government projects.
" I think we're headed for a shutdown because the Democrats won't do the right thing ," Vice President JD Vance told reporters after the meeting at the White House.
As for the core demands from each party, Republicans want a short-term extension of current spending levels, essentially pushing the legislative work a little further. They are happy with the way things are going, especially since the Trump administration has implemented spending cuts on its own, without the help of congressional budget setters.
Democrats want to end this practice. They also want a strong deal to renew government health insurance subsidies for low-income individuals that expire at the end of the year, something Republicans have been reluctant to do so far.
Even though Republicans control Capitol Hill and the White House, they need at least seven Democrats in the Senate to join them to pass a spending package under chamber rules.
Previous shutdowns have blocked food inspections, canceled immigration hearings and delayed some loans for homebuyers.
