The UN human rights office said Tuesday that the use of food as a weapon against civilians in Gaza constitutes a war crime. It is one of the strongest criticisms yet of the new aid distribution model run by an Israeli-backed organization.
Referring to a series of deadly shootings near Gaza Humanitarian Foundation distribution sites, Thameen Al-Kheetan told reporters at a press conference in Geneva, said these actions are war crimes and violations of international law.
" Desperate and hungry people in Gaza continue to face the inhumane choice between dying of starvation or risking being killed while trying to obtain food. Turning food for civilians into weapons, in addition to restricting or preventing their access to life-sustaining services, constitutes a war crime and, in certain circumstances, may constitute elements of other crimes under international law ," he said.
Gaza's civil defense agency said Israeli forces killed 21 people waiting for aid near a distribution site in the central Palestinian territory on Tuesday. About 150 people were reported injured.
