The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has stated that the United States operation in Venezuela has "undermined a fundamental principle of international law."
Speaking to reporters in Geneva, OHCHR spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani said that “states should not threaten or use force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.”
The criticism comes after an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council held a day earlier,
Some of the US's allies also expressed positions against the military operation undertaken by the Trump administration, writes the BBC.
Among them, France was the most outspoken. Its deputy permanent representative, Jay Dharmadhikari, declared that the US capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro “contradicts the principle of the peaceful resolution of disputes and the principle of non-use of force.”
Meanwhile, for the fourth consecutive day, China reiterated its opposition to what it described as "reckless" actions by Donald Trump.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said China is "willing to cooperate with countries in the region to jointly maintain peace and stability."
President Maduro has historically considered China a close ally.
