Arrest of Maduro, Venezuelan opposition leader: A giant step for humanity
Maria Corina Machado

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado says the arrest of Nicolás Maduro is "a big step for humanity, for freedom and human dignity."

Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were kidnapped from their compound in Caracas on Saturday and flown to the US as part of a special forces operation.

Speaking to Fox News, hours after Maduro appeared in a New York court, Machado says she is "grateful" for the actions of US President Donald Trump.

Machado left Venezuela last month to accept the Nobel Peace Prize for her fight against what the Norwegian Nobel Committee called a dictatorship. She has not returned to Venezuela since.

Appearing in court alongside his wife on Monday, Maduro told the judge "I am still president," while pleading not guilty to drug trafficking and other charges.

María Corina Machado, 58, is considered one of the most respected voices in Venezuela's opposition and has long denounced Nicolás Maduro's government as "criminal."

She was barred from running in the 2024 elections, but continued to campaign for the candidate who replaced her on the ballot, Edmundo González.

Maduro was declared the winner, even though polling station counts showed González had won by a large margin.

She has been threatened with arrest multiple times, and because of this, the mother of three spent much of the past year living in hiding. She had sent her adult children abroad for their safety and did not see them for about two years.

Machado was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2025 for her "struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy" in Venezuela, and her journey to receive the award in Norway was quite extraordinary.

The undercover journey, which was dangerous and complicated, saw Machado disguise himself, pass 10 military checkpoints without being caught and leave in a wooden boat from a coastal fishing village.

She has vowed to return to Venezuela, despite knowing "exactly the risks" - although this comment was made before the US seized Maduro.
