The municipality of Crans-Montana has admitted that there were "shortcomings" in carrying out periodic safety and fire checks at the nightclub that was destroyed by flames on New Year's Eve, a tragedy that led to the deaths of 40 people.
"Periodic checks were not carried out during the period 2020–2025. We deeply regret this," declared the president of Crans-Montana, Nicolas Ferro, today during a press conference in the Swiss ski resort, without being able to provide concrete explanations for this "negligence" in the implementation of the checks.
During a press conference, prosecutor Beatrice Pilloud stated the causes of the deadly fire.
"From what we can conclude so far, the fire appears to have started from small fireworks, which came very close to the ceiling of the club. This was, most likely, the initial spark of the fire, which spread at great speed. There is footage that is being analyzed. There are also many witnesses who are being questioned, while reports are being prepared and lists of people who were at 'Le Constellation' on New Year's Eve have been compiled ," she said.
According to the Swiss prosecutor, the next phase of the investigation will focus on the materials used to cover the walls inside the club, operating licenses, fire protection measures that were or were not taken (fire extinguishers, emergency exits, the number of customers that fateful night in relation to the maximum allowed capacity, etc.).
Meanwhile, according to information, authorities are investigating the couple who own the bar as suspects for criminal offenses that include manslaughter.
