Papa Leone: Me in Kiev? The plan is ready, but it is difficult to implement

Pope Leo, as he resumed his messages of peace in Ukraine, expressed his desire to one day visit Kiev, a country devastated by nearly four years of war. He confirmed that, although the plan for the visit exists and has been prepared by the Holy See, its realization is difficult due to security issues.

His words came during a private audience with representatives of the world of optics and optometrists, on the eve of the feast of Saint Lucy, patron saint of sight. In a direct response to a question, the Pope underlined that the plan for the trip-visit is “ready, but we must be realistic about the time when it can be realized.”

This desire of his to go to Ukraine was also expressed a few days ago in Castel Gandolfo, after his fourth meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, twice in May and July, and again last month. After the last meeting, the Pope once again stressed the need for a “just and lasting peace” and appealed for all parties to commit to this goal.

During the audience, the Pope called on Italian diplomats, present for the celebration of their Jubilee, to be “men and women of dialogue,” built on the Christian humanism that also serves as the foundation of European culture. He warned against words that incite hatred, slander or propaganda, underlining that the true diplomatic mission is not the calculation of interests, but the building of peace and reconciliation.

" Let us commit ourselves with hope to temper proclamations of hostility and to cultivate words that build understanding, repair injustices and forgive offenses ," the Pope said.
