Pope Leo XIV has reacted to US President Donald Trump's shocking comments in his interview, where he said that Europe was rotting and had weak leaders.

The Pope insisted that Europe must have a role in any peace deal in Ukraine and criticized what he called the Trump administration's efforts to "disintegrate" the long-standing US-Europe alliance.

"I think unfortunately some parts of this that I've seen have made a big difference in what for many, many years was a real alliance between Europe and the United States."

"The remarks made about Europe, even in recent interviews, I think are trying to dismantle what... should be a very important alliance today and in the future," the Pope said.

He spoke to reporters after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is on another tour to drum up European support for Kiev. The American pontiff said they discussed the need for a ceasefire and the Vatican's efforts to facilitate the return of Ukrainian children taken by Russian authorities.

According to the AP , when asked by a reporter whether he thought the U.S. peace plan for Ukraine was fair, the Pope said he "prefers not to comment on that."

"So, it's a program that President Trump and his advisors have designed. He is the President of the United States. He has the right to do this, but there are a number of things in it that I think. While probably many people in the United States would agree, I think many others would see things in a different way," the Holy Father emphasized.

Zelensky has said that there are three documents in the peace agreement that are being discussed with American and European partners, a 20-point framework document, a second document with security guarantees, and a third document related to the recovery of Ukraine.

Trump's attack on Europe

Meanwhile, yesterday, US tycoon President Donald Trump launched another series of criticisms of European leaders, whom he called "weak" and incapable of facing current challenges.

"I think they're weak. I think they want to be politically correct. I think they don't know what to do. Europe doesn't know what to do," he said in an interview with Politico. According to Trump, the stronger negotiating position is Russia, which he described as "a much bigger country" and stressed that the war in Ukraine "should never have happened."

Speaking further about the continent's leaders, he said that he knows most of them well and that among them there are good leaders, bad leaders, intelligent leaders and even "some really stupid ones". However, according to him, "Europe is not doing a good job in many respects". Regarding Ukraine, Trump accused European countries of "talking a lot and not producing", while the war continues without end.

In the same interview, Trump returned to comment on the situation in Ukraine and relations with President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to him, Ukraine is losing significant territory and Zelensky must accept reality. "It needs to get moving and start accepting things, because it is losing the conflict," he said. Trump emphasized that the territorial losses began long before his mandate.

"They've lost a whole coastal strip, a big strip. They've lost a lot of territory, and good territory. It can't be called a victory."

He also declared that the time has come for elections to be held in Ukraine.

Trump praised Russia, meanwhile, calling it a bigger country and in a very good position to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine. He also spoke again about European leaders, saying he likes the current group, but some of them are “really stupid.” “They talk a lot and do nothing. The war goes on and on,” Trump said./ Pamphlet
