German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius warned that Russian threats would escalate by the end of the decade. He called on European countries to strengthen their defense industries and adapt to geopolitical changes.
Pistorius stressed the urgent need for European Union countries to strengthen their industries for any possible challenges, especially now that the US commitment to the continent is being reduced.
He emphasized that the threats to the Russian President Vladimir Putin should be taken seriously, especially those against the Baltic states, Georgia and Moldova.
As the geopolitical landscape evolves, Pistorius called on European countries to adapt quickly. He called on countries to reach out in terms of armed forces, industry and society, setting a timeline of five to eight years to build up defense capabilities.
Germany has stepped up efforts to rebuild its armed forces, using a special €100 billion fund created after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Pistorius, who took up the role of defense minister earlier this year, has faced some controversy in Germany because of the country's pacifist culture, shaped by the aftermath of World War II.
He remains unwavering in his commitment to a stronger military posture, presenting new defense guidelines that see the Bundeswehr being "war-ready", and Germany taking a leading role in the European military landscape.
"It will take time for the defense industry to increase its capacities. Now we have about five to eight years to make connections with the armed forces, industry and society,'' he said.
In an effort to strengthen European defense cooperation, Pistorius advocated adding a military component to the Weimar Triangle, an informal forum involving Germany, Poland and France.
He expressed great interest in this cooperation and extended an invitation to the newly appointed Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, saying that we are very interested in adding a military component to the Weimar Triangle.
The US is losing interests in Europe
As the US shifts its focus to the Indo-Pacific region, Pistorius stressed the need for Europe to independently improve its security and defense capabilities. He warned that the escalation of arms production by Russia, especially in maintaining its operations in Ukraine, poses a real threat to Europe.
Pistorius called for proactive measures, including increased military cooperation beyond Europe's borders, stating that the alternative to no longer having contact with these countries and leaving it to the Russians and Chinese, if that happened would be it was even more dangerous.
