An Iranian security official has warned that the conflict in the Middle East could soon enter a new phase as United States attacks on Iran continue.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity to Al Jazeera, said the escalation of US operations could lead to the opening of a new conflict front in the region.
" The regional war will soon enter a new phase. As we have said from the beginning, if the United States makes such a mistake, the situation will become much more complex ," the Iranian official said.
According to him, tensions will not be limited to the Persian Gulf. He warned that another strategic strait could soon face the same fate as the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy transport corridors.
The source did not provide further details and did not specify which strait was in question.
However, he stressed that Iran's military and defense plans are organized in phases and can be expanded gradually.
" Our security and defense plans are phased and gradual, and we still have many cards to play, " the Iranian official said.
The statement comes at a time when tensions between the US and Iran in the Persian Gulf have increased significantly, while maritime incidents and warnings about the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz have increased concerns about a wider escalation in the region.
