British diplomats say Iran does not have the will or capacity to continue the war if Donald Trump, in the near future, declares a unilateral ceasefire, declaring that his war objectives have been met.
The officials also said they do not expect the White House to issue statements suggesting the United States would seek to target or seize Iran's highly enriched uranium stockpile. The United States, they said, would be content to highlight the damage it has done to Iranian state institutions and its ballistic missile program.
Officials dismiss Iranian claims that they will not accept a ceasefire as bragging, noting that Iran accepted the ceasefire at the end of the 12-day war in June last year.
Diplomats also do not expect the Gulf states to change their stance of refusing to go on the offensive against Iran, but instead want the conflict to end as soon as possible. The damage to the Gulf's relations with Iran will be long-lasting.
The UK is advising Gulf states on cheaper options for shooting down incoming Iranian drones, perhaps the most striking aspect of the conflict. Bahrain has tried to shoot down 176 drones and the UAE more than 1,500. RAF Typhoons have helped shoot down missiles in Qatar, the UAE and Bahrain.
