The Alternative for Germany (AfD), the German far-right party, is planning a campaign for the dissolution of the European Union or for Germany to leave the European bloc, in the upcoming campaign for the European Parliament elections.
The EP elections are expected to be held in June 2024. In the proposal, it is said that the patience of the party leaders with the EU has run out. Therefore, the creation of a new European economic community, a federation of European nations, is urgently required. AfD members will vote for this position at the end of July.
The party has supported the idea of Germany leaving the EU since 2019 and has called for the dissolution of the European Parliament. The number of EP deputies is divided among member countries, taking into account the number of their inhabitants, but there is a positive discrimination, in favor of smaller countries. No state can have less than six MPs and no country can have more than 96 MPs.
This means that to be elected a member of the European Parliament, a German candidate potentially needs 10 times more votes than his colleague in Malta or Cyprus.
After the European elections, then follows the election of the new European Commission, the president of the Council, and other high functions in the EU institutions. The interest of the European Parliament is to have the largest possible turnout in these elections, since from 1979 to 2014, the percentage of those who voted has been constantly decreasing.
