After conversation with Putin, Trump: Moscow and Kiev will immediately begin

After the 2-hour conversation with Putin, Trump communicates with European leaders where he tells them what he discussed with the Russian President...

Moscow and Kiev will begin ceasefire talks "immediately" with a view to ending the war, US President Donald Trump warned, as he revealed details of his phone calls with the leaders of the two nations on Monday.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin went "very well" and the terms of the ceasefire would be "negotiated between the two sides, as can only be done because they know the details of a negotiation that no one else would know about," and suggested that talks between the two nations could be held at the Vatican following an offer from Pope Leo XIV.

He added that the "tone" of his conversation with Putin had been "excellent" and suggested that the Russian leader had expressed a desire for "large-scale trade" with the US after the war ended.

"There is an extraordinary opportunity for Russia to create huge amounts of jobs and wealth. Its potential is unlimited. Likewise, Ukraine can be a huge beneficiary in trade, in the process of rebuilding its country. Negotiations between Russia and Ukraine will begin immediately," he said.

Trump also stated that he communicated the contents of the call to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, European Commission President Ursula von Der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Frederich Merz, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb "immediately after the call with President Putin" in a separate call.

Russian state media reported that Putin described the call as "informative and useful" and stated that Moscow was ready to work with Ukraine on a memorandum regarding future peace talks.

State news agency RIA Novosti quoted Putin as saying: "we are generally on the right track."

U.S. President Donald Trump spoke with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday. Trump said the two sides would begin talks on a ceasefire "immediately."

Trump had previously said his discussion with Mr Putin would focus on stopping the "bloodshed" as well as potential trade issues, with the latter topic a sign that the US president may seek to use financial incentives to broker some kind of deal after Russia's invasion led to tough sanctions from the US and its allies, which have steadily eroded Moscow's economy.

The American and Russian leaders have spoken on the phone several times since Trump returned to the White House for the start of his second term in January.

The first publicly announced phone call between them was on February 12, just a few weeks after Trump's inauguration.

At the time, Trump said that both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had expressed a desire for peace in separate phone calls, and Trump ordered senior US officials to begin talks to end the war in Ukraine.

Their next conversation took place a little over a month later, on March 18, with the Kremlin stating that they spoke for about 2 hours.

According to statements of calls made by the respective governments, Putin agreed to temporarily halt attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities but refused to support a full 30-day ceasefire that Trump hoped would be the first step toward a permanent peace agreement.

Since then, both Ukraine and Russia have accused each other of violating the moratorium on attacks on energy facilities. /Adapted from Pamphlet/
