According to CNN reporting by journalists Annie Grayer and Lauren Fox, Pentagon officials shared this preliminary assessment during a private briefing with members of Congress on Tuesday.
Two sources familiar with the discussions said the figure of at least $11 billion includes the initial costs of military operations, the use of weaponry and the mobilization of US forces in the region.
Previous CNN reports indicate that the US military used over $5 billion worth of ammunition during the first two days of the war alone.
