The United Nations' top court will rule on Friday on South Africa's request for interim measures in the genocide case against Israel, including a request that Israel halt its offensive in Gaza.
The decision is in the preliminary stage for the case brought by South Africa at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). South Africa claims that Israel's military actions in the war against Hamas - the Palestinian group declared a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union - in Gaza constitute genocide. Israel denies the charges and has asked the court to dismiss the case.
Israel has launched an air and ground offensive in Gaza after Hamas carried out attacks on October 7 in southern Israel that killed 1,200 people, most of them civilians.
Israel often boycotts international tribunals and UN investigations, saying they are unfair and one-sided. But state leaders sent legal teams during the two-day hearing, which was held earlier this month.
Whether the court approves some or all of South Africa's requests for so-called interim measures, it is still unclear whether Israel will comply with them./ REL
