The United States is massing a formidable naval force near the Iranian coast, while Tehran warns of war if attacked; a cold confrontation that could end in open fire at any moment...
The Middle East is moving towards a dangerous boiling point. The US has deployed a “large armada” in the waters off Iran, led by the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and a flotilla of warships, as a clear message of power and readiness for military intervention. President Donald Trump has publicly declared that US forces are “very close to Iran”, while warning that he “hopes military action will not be necessary”. But the reality on the ground shows the opposite: this is a pressure tactic with a real risk of war.
On the other hand, Iran is not holding back in its threatening rhetoric. Authorities in Tehran have activated emergency measures across the country and given local governors special powers to deal with a possible confrontation. President Pezeshkian has declared that any US attack will be considered a declaration of total war and will be followed by a proportionate response.
Murals have appeared on the streets of Tehran showing scenes of confrontation with an American aircraft carrier – propaganda symbolism, but which speaks volumes about the internal climate: mobilization and war propaganda.
Meanwhile, the US, on the one hand, is threatening military force, but on the other hand, it is leaving the door open for diplomacy, stating that it is “ready for talks if Iran requests it.” A game of nerves that involves not only these two countries, but the entire region. US allies in the Persian Gulf are on alert, Israel is following developments with a critical eye, while the EU maintains an ambiguous stance.
In the background lies a fragile Iran, engulfed for months by mass protests over the economic crisis, political repression and international isolation. With over 300 people killed and thousands arrested by domestic opposition movements, the Iranian regime seems ready to use an external conflict to suppress internal tension and revive nationalism.
In this dangerous landscape, any wrong move, any provocation or incident could be the spark that ignites a conflict of unprecedented proportions. And precisely for this reason, the US-Iran confrontation is testing not only the regional balance, but also global diplomacy. Will reason prevail or will we see another major war in the Middle East? The clock is ticking./ Pamphlet
