France has sent its aircraft carrier "Charles de Gaulle" to the waters of the North Atlantic, at a time when geopolitical tensions around Greenland have increased significantly after recent statements and movements by the United States of America. The French Ministry of Defense has confirmed the start of the operation, while according to sources of the AFP agency, the ship is headed northwest, near the disputed Arctic region.
This move comes as an indirect response to the positions of former US President Donald Trump, who has threatened possible intervention and demanded that US military bases in Greenland return to sovereign US territory. Although he later softened his rhetoric, efforts for an agreement remain active, while Greenland authorities have categorically rejected any such scenario.
The French Defense Ministry stated that the "Charles de Gaulle" will engage in a large-scale joint exercise with NATO allies and regional partners.
"Held over the coming weeks in the Atlantic area, a strategic area for the protection of European interests, this exercise will unite French forces with those of our closest allies," the statement said.
The deployment of the aircraft carrier in this region is seen as a clear signal that France, and consequently Europe, do not intend to remain passive in the face of American maneuvers in the Arctic and around Greenland, an area that is gaining strategic importance due to climate change, natural resources, and military potential.
