US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has stated that the US is supporting regional efforts to bring about a diplomatic solution to the "extremely disturbing" situation in Nigeria.
This support comes after the junta ignored regional demands to relinquish power and began announcing a new cabinet, foreign media reported.
"It is certain that diplomacy is the preferred way to solve this situation. This is the approach of the Economic Community of West African States, it is also our approach, and we support his efforts to restore constitutional order," said Blinken.
West African heads of state are preparing to meet this week to discuss the crisis in the country, where soldiers seized control of the state and took President Mohamed Bazoum hostage on July 26. Meanwhile, acting US Deputy Secretary of State, Victoria Nuland traveled to the capital.
