40 people have lost their lives as a result of floods in South Brazil, after several days of heavy rains.
Another 68 people are still missing, civil defense authorities said.
More than 24,000 people were displaced from their homes due to the floods, which hit more than 265 municipalities in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.
More than 8 thousand people are staying in emergency shelters.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva described the disaster as one of the worst floods in the country's history.
Officials said more than two thousand civilian rescue workers had been deployed and the Ministry of Defense said more than 900 soldiers were also sent along with nine military aircraft and 98 boats to help with the rescue effort.
So far, more than eight thousand people have been rescued.
The rain started on Monday and caused major flooding and landslides in some areas.
Many homes and bridges were damaged, while some roads became impassable.
