New video footage has been released of the January 29, 2025, mid-air crash near Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C., that killed 67 people. The video shows the moment an American Airlines passenger jet collided with a military Black Hawk helicopter, shedding light on the final seconds before the tragedy.

According to official data, the CRJ700 regional jet was in the final stages of landing after traveling from Wichita, Kansas, while the military helicopter was conducting a training flight. The two vehicles collided at low altitude over the Potomac River and fell into the water, with no survivors.

Preliminary investigations by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) indicate that the airspace near the airport was congested and included procedures that relied on “visual separation,” where pilots must avoid each other without full assistance from radar. This system is now considered a major contributing factor to the accident.

US authorities have also acknowledged shortcomings in coordination between the helicopter crew and air traffic controllers. According to official documents, the helicopter may have used incorrect altitude data, while controllers did not give full warning of the approaching aircraft.

Recent reports point to a possible cause linked to a combination of factors, including poor operational decisions, system overload and a lack of previous reforms in air safety.

Following the accident, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has taken action, restricting helicopter flights near the airport and eliminating certain unsafe operating practices. The final investigation is ongoing and is expected to determine full institutional and individual responsibilities.
