NATO has activated the new "Arctic Guard" mission,

NATO has activated the new "Arctic Guard" mission, aiming to increase military presence and coordination in the northern region.

The alliance considers the Arctic an area of strategic importance and seeks to improve its capabilities in the air, sea and land.

The decision follows recent discussions between Denmark and the United States about the political future of Greenland. The Arctic issue, along with the situation in Ukraine, is on the agenda of member states' defense ministers, meeting in Brussels on Thursday.

The alliance leaders emphasize that the security of the Arctic is directly linked to the security of North America and Europe. According to them, a stable region in the north affects the stability of the Atlantic and the defense of member countries.

At the Davos summit, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and US President Donald Trump discussed expanding the alliance's role in the Arctic. They agreed that NATO should take greater responsibility in the area, while Denmark, the US and Greenland will continue talks on issues related to the territory.

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is absent from the Brussels meeting. The United States is represented by Undersecretary of Defense Elbridge Colby.

The alliance has not yet released data on the number of participating countries or the level of forces committed. NATO confirms that the mission is multidimensional in nature and includes air, sea and land operations.

The discussions are expected to determine the alliance's next steps for its presence in the Arctic.
