Clashes over Macedonia's name, Mickoski: We respect the agreement, so

The representative for the formation of the new government of North Macedonia, Hristijan Mickoski, said that the government he will lead will fully respect international agreements, including the one with Greece for changing the name of the state from Macedonia to North Macedonia.

Mickoski said this while commenting on the recommendations from the United States and the European Union that Skopje should respect international agreements.

" A deal is an agreement reached between at least two parties, and both parties must respect it. If you specifically mean the Prespa Agreement, we as the next government respect it in detail, everything that is part of our legislation, in the Constitution, is respected in detail and there should be no dilemma here ," said Mickoski.

The US special envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, said on May 22 that the US expects North Macedonia to continue on the European path, respecting the agreements reached with neighboring countries.

During an interview with the European Center of the Atlantic Council, Escobar was asked if, after the victory of VMRO-DPMNE in the elections held on May 8 and the growing concern about the Prespa Agreement, he still believes that the road to Europe will continue.

" Yes. I think that Europe and the United States made it very clear to the president after the inauguration, that we fully expect North Macedonia to continue on its European path, to engage, to continue to be a committed member of NATO -s, and we received guarantees from all levels of the party leadership of the main party [VMRO-DPMN] that won the elections, that they will remain committed to the European path , "said Escobar.

However, Mickoski said that the Greek side must also respect its obligations arising from this agreement, which are related to not hindering the Euro-Atlantic integration process and in other international institutions, not using the term "Skopje" for North Macedonia, replacing guide signs in the Greek territory, and other issues.

" At the same time, I expect that the second signatory, which is our southern neighbor, will respect them. We have created a document on how much has been implemented by our side and how much has been implemented by the Greek side, and we plan to present it to all those who are curious to know how much both sides respect the bilateral international agreement ", said Mickoski.

He said that he expects all the "strategic partners" of North Macedonia, who are part of those agreements, "to respect them as the Macedonian authorities also respect them".

The Prespa agreement was reached in 2018 between former prime ministers Zoran Zaev and Alexis Tsipras./ REL
