Two people were killed and 12 others were injured on Sunday in Al-Kharj, Saudi Arabia, after a military shell hit a residential building, the Saudi Civil Defense said. The incident occurred in a residential complex used by a maintenance and cleaning company, about 107 km (66 miles) southeast of the capital Riyadh.
According to Saudi authorities, the two victims were an Indian national and a Bangladeshi, while all the other injured, 12 people, were Bangladeshi nationals.
This is the first incident with civilian casualties reported in the kingdom's territory since the start of the escalation of the war with Iran. Emergency teams responded immediately to the scene, but the shell caused significant material damage.
The Saudi Civil Defense statement did not specify the source of the missile. However, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced earlier on Sunday that it had carried out attacks on radar systems in several areas, including Al-Kharj, Iranian state broadcaster IRIB reported.
Al-Kharj is located near Prince Sultan Air Base, a key Saudi military installation that has recently been targeted several times by Iran amid regional tensions and the US military presence at the base.
This attack comes amid a continuing wave of Iranian attacks on targets in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries that host American interests, marking a dangerous escalation in the current conflict.
Saudi authorities have stressed that air defenses have managed to neutralize most previous attacks, but this case shows that some shells managed to bypass the defenses.
