United States President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning about the future of leadership in Iran, stating that the country's next supreme leader will not last long in power unless he enjoys Washington's approval.
In an interview with ABC News, Trump said that any successor to Ali Khamenei would have to receive US "approval" to remain in power.
"He's going to have to get our approval. If he doesn't get it, it won't last long ," the US president said.
Trump also stressed that he is willing to cooperate with any remaining elements of the current Iranian regime if this will help stabilize the situation and avoid new tensions in the future.
According to him, Washington's goal is to avoid the recurrence of the same crises in short intervals of time.
"We want to make sure we don't have to come back here every ten years, especially if there isn't a president like me who is willing to take such actions," he declared.
The US president added that he does not want to face the same situation again in a few years, warning that the worst alternative would be for Iran to develop nuclear weapons.
