The Silent Bloc of the Balkans: Bosnia, a "bomb" that could explode...

The Balkans, although neglected by Italian and Western media attention due to other global crises, remains a key area for the stability of the European continent. This space, which has traditionally been an arena of clashes between great powers such as the USA, Russia, China and Turkey, is once again at risk of a new outbreak of crisis, with the highest probability of this outbreak occurring in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The situation in the country has deteriorated significantly in recent months, with political clashes reaching alarming levels. The leader of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik, has been sentenced to prison and banned from public office after a lengthy trial, after he refused to carry out the orders of the international High Representative. This has prompted a strong reaction from Serb political forces in Bosnia, who have declared their non-recognition of the decisions of the court and the Central Election Commission. Furthermore, a referendum has been announced that aims to legitimize Dodik's position and challenge the central authority of Sarajevo.

Political rhetoric has hardened, with institutions such as the Assembly of Republika Srpska taking steps to block the functioning of the Bosnian judiciary in their territory. Laws have been passed that aim to create a new constitution, an independent army and intelligence service, furthering the secessionist agenda. Dodik continues to act as president, sign laws and use state symbols, while announcing that new elections will not be recognized and will be obstructed by local security structures.

The Bosnian crisis is no longer an internal matter. Serbia openly supports Dodik, pursuing a policy of spiritual and cultural unification of Serbs into a common entity. Viktor Orbán's Hungary has not only supported Dodik politically, but has also financed him with tens of millions of euros through direct loans. Orbán has called the intervention of European officials unacceptable and criticized the international representative as an undemocratic imposition.

A less mentioned but important factor is the involvement of former US governor Rod Blagojevich, who, with strong ties to the Trump movement in the US, has launched an international campaign to support Dodik, comparing him to Trump himself and portraying him as a shield of Judeo-Christian values in the face of what he calls the threat of an Islamic Bosnia. He has accused Sarajevo of collaborating with terrorist organizations and representing Iranian interests in Europe.

In this clash, Great Britain has intervened on Sarajevo's side, promising military training and assistance to Bosnia's armed forces, as well as investments in cybersecurity centers, with the justification of fighting Russian influences and disinformation.

This crisis has become a dangerous game where international actors are pursuing their own agendas, treating Bosnia as a territory on which to measure their geopolitical influence. This situation, where separatist forces are supported financially, diplomatically and propagandistically by external actors, while the central authorities try to maintain constitutional order with Western assistance, is leading the country towards a possible collision. In this heated climate, there does not seem to be a clear path for dialogue and compromise.

Tensions are high, and a small incident could easily spark a larger crisis. Instead of being a model of post-war coexistence, Bosnia is turning into a classic example of a fragile state, overwhelmed by internal ethnic and external strategic interests. And this time, no one can say they didn’t see it coming. /Adapted from “Inside Over”
