United States President Donald Trump became the butt of jokes due to his geographical confusion at a summit held on Thursday.
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama was filmed joking with French President Emmanuel Macron and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev during the European Political Community meeting in Copenhagen.
"You should apologize ... because you didn't congratulate us on the peace agreement that President Trump made between Albania and Azerbaijan," Rama told Macron, drawing laughter from Aliyev.
"I'm sorry about that," Macron replied jokingly.
Trump has repeatedly confused Armenia with Albania when talking about his efforts to resolve long-standing tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
"I resolved wars that were unsolvable. Azerbaijan and Albania, it had been going on for many years, I had prime ministers and presidents in my office," he said during an interview on Fox News last month.
And during a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump said: “We solved Aber-baijan and Albania,” mispronouncing the name of one South Caucasus country and completely confusing the other.
To be clear: Trump brokered a deal between the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan at the White House in August, with both countries pledging to end decades of war and expand relations with Washington. The Republican leader hailed the agreement as a major diplomatic victory, bolstering his credentials as he campaigns for the Nobel Peace Prize.
He has repeatedly claimed to have ended seven wars since returning to office this year, acting as a mediator, a claim that the Associated Press has verified as untrue. Among the conflicts Trump has claimed to have resolved are those between Serbia and Kosovo, as well as between Egypt and Ethiopia. While there are tensions between these countries, they have not been at war recently.
For its part, India has rejected White House claims that Trump contributed to reducing tensions with Pakistan in May.
The Armenia-Albania confusion is not the first time Trump has displayed questionable knowledge of the geography of countries.
Once, during the 2023 campaign, he confused Hungary with Turkey, referring to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán as “the leader of Turkey” and saying his country has a “front” with Russia. (Neither Turkey nor Hungary has a land border with Russia.)
And before a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in August, Trump said: “We’re going to Russia. It’s going to be a big event.” The summit actually took place in Alaska, a U.S. state./ Politico
