Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said that Iran sees retaliation for attacks by Israel and the United States as "its legitimate right and duty."
In a statement released on Sunday in Iranian state media, Pezeshkian said Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had been killed "at the hands of the worst evildoers in the world."
"The Islamic Republic of Iran considers bloodshed and revenge against the perpetrators and commanders of this historic crime as its legitimate duty and right to fulfill this great responsibility and duty with all its might," Pezeshkian said.
He described the supreme leader's rule as a "great and divine leadership" that relied on "the will, vote and opinion of the people."
To be clear, the supreme leader was and is deeply unpopular among many Iranians, both at home and in the diaspora.
He could not be overthrown by the vote of the people, who have taken to the streets in large numbers on several occasions during his 37-year rule.
But Pezeshkian insisted in his statement that he "gave honor and dignity to the Iranian nation."
