Iran has fired two missiles towards Cyprus, home to UK military bases, escalating tensions in the Middle East, British Defence Secretary John Healey has confirmed.

Cyprus hosts two sovereign UK military bases, Akrotiri and Dhekelia, which play a strategic role in Western operations in the region. Healey stressed that initial assessments indicated that these bases were not targeted in the attack.

"We are quite certain that they were not targeting our bases," he declared, adding that the incident "shows how uncontrollable" Iran's retaliatory response is.

Several US bases in the Middle East have been attacked with missiles and drones, while Washington has increased its military alert level.

The developments come after the United States and Israel launched waves of air and missile strikes on targets in Iran, describing them as preemptive actions to hit Tehran's military infrastructure and strategic capabilities.

Healey reiterated the British government's call for an immediate de-escalation of tensions, urging Iran to "retreat from its increasingly uncontrolled and indiscriminate attacks in the region" and "cease its weapons programs."

The situation remains volatile, while regional countries and Western partners closely monitor developments, amid fears of an expansion of the conflict.
