President Milatovic is optimistic: Montenegro will join the EU by 2028

While the EU membership of Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina is conditioned by member countries of the union, our northern neighbor Montenegro seems to be moving faster towards the European bloc.

At least this is the opinion of the newly elected president, Jakov Milatovic, who in an interview with the British media 'The Guardian' declared that Podgorica will join the European Union in 5 years.

"Strengthening the rule of law in Montenegro will be an important signal that the country is progressing. We are optimistic that within 2028 we will be full members of the European Union. Our membership would also show the commitment of the EU," he said . President Milatovic.

The Montenegrin head of state also emphasized that the country's pro-Western orientation will not change even though the prime minister, once an ally of Milatovic, was forced to form an alliance with a pro-Serbian party to form the government after parliamentary elections in the summer.

He promised 100% compliance with EU foreign policy and greater activation in NATO. In an interview for the prestigious British newspaper, the 36-year-old said that appointments to the judiciary will be made within 2023.

"Under my leadership, there is zero tolerance for corruption and the new parliamentary majority will make judicial appointments by the end of the year," Milatovic said.
The neighboring state of 619,000 people applied to join the EU in 2008, two years after gaining independence from Serbia, but progress has been stalled by concerns about corruption and political instability.
