Broke competition rules, the EU fines Apple company 1.8 billion euros!

Apple has been fined 1.8 billion euros by the EU for violating competition rules with music streaming services. According to the commission, Apple had unfairly favored its music streaming service over those of its rivals.

The fine is nearly four times higher than expected in a move by the European Commission to show it will crack down on tech companies that abuse their dominant position in the phone and online services market.

European competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager said a smaller fine would be nothing more than the equivalent of a "parking fine" and was designed to act as a "deterrent" to such practices by Apple and others.

The Commission found that Apple applied restrictions to app developers preventing them from informing iOS users of alternative and cheaper music subscription services available outside the app. This is illegal under EU antitrust rules," the European Commission said.

Apple charges a 30% fee for sales made through apps on iOS operating systems. It also prohibits applications within the operating system from providing links to external registration sites to bypass the fee. In a response to today's fine, Apple said in a statement that it will appeal.

We've helped markets thrive, promoting competition and innovation at every turn – and the App Store is an important part of that story. So while we respect the European Commission, the facts simply do not support this decision. And as a result, Apple will appeal ," the announcement said.
