The French government has called for calm after riots on the streets of Paris after a police officer shot dead a 17-year-old teenager. The incident happened during a police check of the car in Paris yesterday evening.
"After this drama, after the death of a young man, there were several acts of violence that I condemn. Thirty-one people have been arrested by police mainly in Hauts-de-Seine, in Ile-de-France, mainly around the Nanterre district. Twenty-four policemen were injured and about 40 cars were burned," said the French interior minister, Gerald Darmanin.
The killing of the 17-year-old sparked tensions between angry residents who set fire to barricades and police who fired tear gas at protesters in the streets of the Nanterre district in western Paris.
According to the prosecutor, the police officer who shot the teenager was arrested on charges of manslaughter. Residents of the neighborhood, where the incident took place, staged a protest in front of the police station.
The unrest began on Tuesday evening with a demonstration in front of the police station in Nanterre and spread to neighboring towns overnight. In Mantes-la-Jolie, for example, a town hall was set on fire while a primary school burned down in Nanterre. Protesters erected barricades and prevented firefighters from extinguishing the fire.
